I've been running in the Hoka Challenger 8 for the past few weeks and can highly recommend it as a versatile road to trail shoe.
Having taken the shoe out on a wide variety of terrain, the shoe has handled near enough everything well. It is cushioned enough that on the road I could easily forget that I'm not wearing a trail shoe, however on the rougher terrain the shoe grips well and smooths out the lumps and bumps well. I have particularly enjoyed running in this shoe on hard pack gravel and fire roads due to the well balanced combination of cushioning and grip.
One of my favourite features of the shoe is the change of fit from the previous models, with Hoka choosing to widen the midfoot and toebox. In the past I have struggled with the slightly narrow fit of Hoka's, but the Challenger 8 has immediate out-of-box comfort and I have had no issues with the fit whatsoever. This new fit, alongside the plush midsole and lightweight, yet incredibly soft, mesh upper material combine well to make a very comfortable shoe.
I think Hoka have really nailed it with the Hoka Challenger 8 and it is definitely one of the most versitile shoes on the market!
